Summer Breakfast on Nova FM

Breakfast is my least favourite meal of the day. I should rephrase that, breakfast in Australia is my least favourite meal of the day. Breakfast in any Asian country is incredible – hot soups, curries, string hoppers, congee – but breakfast in Australia consists of dry cereals, bland toast, and the occasional hard boiled egg. WHY?! Admittedly who has time to whip up a quick Rogan Josh before 7am? But I guess that’s why micro-zapped left overs from last nights dinner remains my favourite breakfast option.

This summer my breakfast food became the topic of much discussion because for the first time I ate breakfast at work. Yes people,¬†work,¬†I had a job for a whole month working on breakfast radio for Nova FM in Melbourne! Which partly explains why I haven’t written to you for a long time. The other part of my excuse involves way too many empty bottles of Christmas cheer…

The Tommy & Dani Show! (must sing in the theme song of The Itchy & Scratchy Show..)

Strangely I found getting up at 3.40am not that bad. In fact I find it easier getting up in the middle of the night than dragging myself out of bed at 7am. The thing that I did find difficult about my new job was what to have for breakfast and at what time. Talk about First World Problems! My adorable and very funny co-host Tommy Little looked at me strangely when I bought a bowl of pesto pasta with grilled veggies into the studio ready to tuck in at approximately 5.40am. (I had been awake for 2 hours already!!!) I tried drinking Up & Go’s on the way to work, but like most liquid drinks that promise they are a complete meal, they left my stomach feeling empty and confused. Post New Years resolution I attempted to stay away from wheat – the supposed devil incarnate – and ate gluten free, wheat free, nut free and flavour free rice flakes, instead I should have eaten my own arm. Needless to say I never did resolve my breakfast dilemma, maybe I should just move to somewhere in Asia…

Even though my job at Nova was during breakfast time, I didn’t talk about breakfast food. Thank God who would want to talk (or read) about that!? Instead I opened up to listeners and talked about all sorts of things in my life largely un-food-related (sans my obsession with Campbells Bolognese sauce in a can). My dog weeing on my bed, or licking my face, became topics for in-depth conversation. And my boyfriend just loved it when I gave away his cologne on-air to a group of construction workers because it smelled like my ex, or when I revealed just how much I loved that potato peeler he gave to me for Christmas! I also got to interview some fairly amazingly talented people like Rebel Wilson, Samantha Jade, Jessica Mauboy and weirdly Matt Preston. Talk about role reversal!

You can catch up on the Tommy & Dani show through something called a podcast. But one thing is for certain, I love breakfast radio a whole heap more than I love breakfast.
